A detective has told the court how a Somali national fraudulently acquired a Kenyan national identity card by falsely claiming to be the son of a woman who later disowned him in court.
Sergeant Amos Gachie Gakure, a detective attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Public Complaints Department, told Milimani Resident Magistrate Rose Ndombi estified that the matter was reported on January 4, 2023, concerning Abdihakim Said Jama, a non-Kenyan found in possession of a forged identification document.
Gakure revealed that investigators sought verification from the Department of Registration of Persons regarding the birth certificate Jama had presented. Findings confirmed that the document, bearing entry No. L00906313/13 and serial number 4208657, was forged and originally belonged to Anna Gatwiri Kithure.
Further investigations disclosed that Jama had falsely presented himself as the son of Fatuma Mohamed, a resident of Burat, Isiolo County. However, when authorities located Fatuma, she denied any familial ties to Jama
“We found the supposed mother and she provided a list of her eight children. She confirmed that the accused’s name was unfamiliar and disowned any relation to him,” Gakure told the court.
When Fatuma took the stand, she recalled how government officers visited her home in June 2023 and showed her photos of Jama, inquiring if she knew him.
“Upon seeing the photos, I did not recognize him. He is not my son,” she testified, leaving the court in shock as she confirmed that she had never met Jama before the court proceedings.
Another witness, Abdi Aliow Issak, a businessman and member of the vetting committee for Ngare Mara Location, also dismissed Jama’s claims that he was vetted and approved for an ID card in 2011. Issak stated that he never participated in any such meeting and denied signing any documents related to Jama’s application.
Jama is facing charges for allegedly providing false information to a public officer between March and June 2011 in Isiolo County. The prosecution argues that he used fraudulent documents to falsely claim Kenyan citizenship.
The hearing is set to resume on April 1, 2025.
