Four Nabbed in Sh 25.8 Million Fake Gold Scam in Nairobi’s Runda Estate

Four individuals have been charged in connection with a fraudulent gold deal that allegedly saw a foreign investor swindled out of USD 200,000 (approximately Ksh 25.8 million) in Nairobi’s upscale Runda estate.

Appearing before Milimani Principal Magistrate Rose Ndombi, the suspects Felix Odhiambo Otieno alias Sammy, Derrick Odhiambo Omore, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed and Moses Odhiambo Auma were jointly accused of using fraudulent tricks to obtain the money from Voltex Commercial Trading Limited through its representative, Ala Bassam Hisham, under the pretense of supplying gold, which was never delivered.

The court heard that the incident took place on April 22, 2025, when the accused allegedly conspired with others not before the court to execute the scheme.

The four were also charged with preparation to commit a felony, contrary to Section 308 (2) of the Penal Code. On May 7, 2025, they were allegedly found in possession of items suspected to be used in the commission of the offense, including 25 yellowish metallic bars resembling gold, a weighing machine,  an electric gold tester gun, assorted documents bearing the logo of the Ministry of Mining, and two plastic bottles containing unidentified liquid. 

Additionally, one of the accused Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed, , faced a separate charge of personation , after allegedly presenting himself as an official from the Ministry of Mining,  Blue Economy and Maritime Services, specifically the Directorate of Geological Surveys and Geo Information Management , in a bid to deceive foreign nationals involved in the deal.

The accused denied all charges and were released on a bond of Sh 500,000 each or an alternative cash bail of Sh 100,000

The matter will be mentioned on the 25th May.
