A Nairobi businessman has been charged in court for allegedly defrauding an investor of Sh16.75 million under the guise of making a capital investment on her behalf.

Peter Mutua Maithya appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina and denied the charges of obtaining money by false pretenses.

According to the prosecution, between January 26, 2020, and September 13, 2021, at the offices of Vimcape Capital Limited in Bruce House, Nairobi, Maithya falsely convinced Janet Middah Ngota that he was making a lucrative investment for her benefit. However,<span;>investigations later revealed that this claim was untrue.

The prosecution stated that Ngota entrusted the substantial amount to Maithya, believing it would be invested in a profitable venture. However, she later discovered inconsistencies in the transactions, prompting her to seek legal redress. Authorities launched an investigation, leading to Maithya’s arraignment in court.

Maithya was released on a cash bail of Sh 1.5Million  pending pre trial.

The court is set to hear the matter further on 8th April.
