Senior Police Officer Breaks Down in Court During Testimony in Kayole Murder Case
A senior police officer broke down in tears at the Milimani High Court on Wednesday while testifying in a murder case involving six police officers from Kayole.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dennis Omunga, a former Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kayole Police Station and now an instructor at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, became emotional as he recalled the loss of 13 officers.
Omunga told the court that during his tenure as OCS, a total of 13 police officers were killed by armed robbers in Kayole within just two months.
He criticized the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for what he termed as indifference toward the welfare of officers killed in the line of duty.
Recalling the incident that led to the current case, Omunga said that on the day Wickliffe Vincent Owuor was shot dead at Kayole Junction, he had received a radio report about armed robbers terrorizing members of the public. He immediately dispatched six officers to respond.
“When the officers arrived, they ordered the suspects to surrender, but the gunmen opened fire,” Omunga testified.
He said the officers returned fire, killing one suspect on the spot, while two others escaped on a motorcycle, firing in the air to scare both police and civilians.
He added that officers recovered a homemade gun, several rounds of ammunition, and a national ID from the deceased suspect, which were later handed over to DCI officers.
Omunga further told the court that IPOA investigators later visited his office, accompanied by a senior lawyer who had publicly posted on social media that the officer who shot the suspect should face murder charges.
He accused IPOA of bias, saying the agency appeared to have taken sides even before investigations were completed.
He defended the six accused officers, saying they acted professionally and within the law while responding to a distress call from the public.
Omunga also revealed that he later learned that the deceased suspect, Wickliffe Vincent Owuor, had been linked to a KSh 76 million armed robbery in Westlands prior to the Kayole shooting.
