A man alleged to have brutally murdered his wife in Huruma Estate has told a Nairobi court that he wants his statement recanted because he was forced to sign it.
John Kyama Wambua told Milimani trial Magistrate Carolyne Nyaguthie that while in police custody, some officers forced him to sign a statement.
“Your Honour, I pray to the court to help me because I was forced to sign a statement. It did not come from me,” Wambua told the court.
He appeared in court on Monday for the mention of his miscellaneous case after being detained for 21 days.
The investigating officer requested to continue holding Wambua for 14 more days pending the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) decision on whether to charge him.
The officer informed the court that investigations had been completed and the file had been forwarded to the DPP for review.
“Your Honour, the investigations are complete, and we forwarded the file to the DPP’s office on February 13. We are seeking two more weeks to detain the suspect as we await the review,” the court was told.
The magistrate agreed with the police application and granted them two more weeks to detain Wambua.
“I allow the police to detain the suspect for two more weeks. If the DPP decides to charge you, the trial court will hear your application regarding being forced to sign the statement. The court will give directions on the matter since today’s mention is only to confirm whether investigations were completed,” the magistrate said.
The case will be mentioned on March 3.
